Rotten egg odor blamed on National Fuel chemical leak in East Aurora

A small amount of a chemical being transferred from one storage tank to another at a National Fuel service station in East Aurora Friday is being blamed for a rotten egg smell that spread throughout the towns of Orchard Park and Hamburg.

Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard said the chemical, mercaptan, is harmless and non-toxic and is added to odorless natural gas so leaks can be detected. Authorities began fielding calls about the odor as far west as Route 5.
