A 16-year-old Riverside High School student was gunned down at about 4:20 p.m. Friday afternoon in Black Rock on a snow-covered street off Hertel Avenue and Military Road.
The victim was identified as Lewis Adams. Chief of Detectives Dennis Richards confirmed that the boy was shot in front of his Deer Street home as he was about to get into a white car being driven by a female friend.
That car, found abandoned and with bullet holes on Thompson Street, near Austin Street, a half-mile away from the shooting, has been impounded by police.
Deer runs between Hertel and Gladstone Street.
Earlier Friday, Richards said Lewis – whom he called a "targeted individual" – was entering a parked car on Deer near Hertel when the gunman emerged from a black Pontiac Grand Am that had just pulled up, chased him toward Gladstone and shot him several times.
The gunman, described as a young man wearing a hoodie, scrambled back to the Grand Am, which contained at least two others wearing hoodies. The car sped off east on Hertel toward Elmwood Avenue, Richards said.
Lewis, a freshman at Riverside, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said Lewis' stepmother identified the shooting victim.
Richards declined to comment when asked whether the youth was shot because of gang- or drug-related activities. He would say only that the investigation is "in its early stages."
Richards said police are looking for help from the public.
