Ceremony at Rotary Rink ushers in ice-skating season

The 2012 Downtown Christmas Tree Lighting Celebration will be held at 6 p.m. today in Rotary Rink at Fountain Plaza. The annual event, presented by National Grid, marks the official opening of the free ice-skating season at the plaza, with ice skating starting at 5 p.m.

A countdown of the lighting of the tree will include Santa Claus lighting a fireworks display over the plaza. Afterward, there will be visits with Santa, holiday gifts, horse and wagon rides, clowns, balloon art and face painting along with skating.

There is a $2 skate rental fee for kids, $3 for adults.
