Buffalo man pleads guilty in Falls shooting incident

LOCKPORT – Willie E. Mathews, 45, of Shirley Avenue, Buffalo, admitted in Niagara County Court Thursday that he fired a stolen 9mm handgun into a group of people outside a Niagara Falls bar.

Mathews pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree reckless endangerment and fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property. County Judge Sara Sheldon Farkas scheduled sentencing for Feb. 14.

Mathews could receive up to two years in Niagara County Jail or up to four years in state prison, at Farkas’ discretion.

Police said a gun was fired outside the 3M Club on Highland Avenue about 3 a.m. June 10, and a car was heavily damaged. Four hours later, someone fired a gun into a house on Cleveland Avenue in the Falls, where Mathews was then living. No one was hurt in either incident.
