Nixon Peabody partner Sheldon K. Smith recently received a Pro Bono Award at the 2012 Western District Federal Court Dinner, hosted annually by the Bar Associations of Erie and Monroe Counties. Smith received the award for his work over several years representing an inmate at Wende Correctional Facility, who alleged various claims under the Americans with Disabilities Act. ?In addition, Smith was recently ?awarded the "2012 Legal Services Award" by the Minority Bar ?Association of Western New ?York for his leadership roles with respect to initiatives involving mentoring, education, and networking events on behalf of MBAWNY, the University at Buffalo Law School, the New York State Bar Association, Commercial and Federal Litigation Section, and the Rochester Black Bar Association.

The Construction Exchange of Buffalo & WNY, a nonprofit organization that serves the Western New York commercial construction industry, named Bill Diehl membership director. The organization has increased its membership by ?50 percent over the last five years.

Chadbourne & Parke, a New York City-based international law firm, named John Marciano a partner. Marciano, a Buffalo native, graduated from Canisius College, earned his J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and his tax LL.M. from Georgetown University Law Center. He is based at the firm's Washington, D.C., office.

Upstate Farms, a part of Upstate Niagara Cooperative, was recently recognized by the National Milk Producers Federation for the company's "Welcome Back to the Farm" campaign. The federation awarded the campaign second place in the Special Projects Advertising category, and the revamped Upstate Farms' website placed third in its category. Cenergy, of East Aurora, partnered with Upstate Farms and photographer Rhea Anna to create the campaign.

Wellsville Carpet Town, a 45-year-old home furnishings retailer headquartered in Olean, announced the opening of Ashley Furniture HomeStore in Akron/Fairlawn, Ohio. The expansion into the Ohio market will create more than 40 jobs. WCTI operates eight Ashley Furniture HomeStores: six in central and Western New York and two in central Pennsylvania.

Stampede Presentation Products, an Amherst-based distributor of presentation equipment, opened its fourth North American distribution center in Duluth, Ga. The center will serve the southeast region of the United States, including dealers in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina, as well as a portion of the Southwest territory.
