RYTHER, Nancy E.

RYTHER - Nancy E. Age 89, entered eternal life on Tuesday, September 25, 2012. Born and raised in Buffalo, NY, she was the daughter of C. Gordon and Gladys (Gibson) Ryther. Nancy graduated from South Park High School earning her diploma by completing the Arts with Honor Course of Study. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts at Oberlin College in Ohio and a Master of Arts at Cornell University at Ithaca, NY. Nancy had a long and highly regarded career as a Teacher of Reading and English in the Buffalo School System, primarily in the Kenmore-Tonawanda schools. During her summers, Nancy pursued her love of reading and learning through continuing education classes. She especially enjoyed attending concerts, operas and theater performances with friends. Her passion for travel began during trips with her parents and led to many adventures with friends and tour groups. When she retired, Nancy added Elderhostel trips to her itinerary. Everyone who knew her was familiar with the slides and scrapbooks she collected from many countries around the world. Nancy also enjoyed watching and learning about birds locally and on her travels. When she was at home in Buffalo, Nancy proved many times over that the prediction on her high school diploma was true, demonstrating "that her ideals, habits and character give promise of a useful and worthy citizenship". She was actively involved in the League of Women Voters, the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site and volunteered her time and energy to several organizations and study groups for the benefit of the City of Buffalo. Nancy was also a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Buffalo and then later, the Westminster Presbyterian Church on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo, enjoying their fellowship and lively discussion groups. Nancy spent the last three years living in Oneonta, NY closer to her family. Nancy was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Gordon G. Ryther. Survivors include her nieces, Mary Beth (and Allen) Laing of Oneonta, NY, Barbara S. Ryther of Belmont, MA; nephew, Richard G. Ryther of Slingerlands, NY and great-nephews, Jeffrey S. Hiscox and Michael D. Hiscox of Oneonta, NY, great-nephew, Andrew R. Ryther and great-nieces, Caitlin A. Ryther and Rachel I. Ryther.
