The Brockport State College student who authorities say was beaten to death in her dorm room early Saturday has been identified as Alexandra Kogut, 18, of New Hartford, near Utica.
Kogut was a freshman majoring in communication at the school, according to college officials.
University police found Kogut's body about 3 a.m. in her dorm room at McLean Hall after her mother called the college because she was worried about her daughter. The girl's boyfriend, Clayton Whittemore, 21, was located at a Thruway rest area about an hour later and taken into custody. He has been charged with second-degree murder and is being held without bail in the Monroe County Jail.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said today that the cause of Kogut's death was "blunt force trauma." She was described as having suffered extensive damage to her upper body.
Kogut's family also released a statement saying, "Alexandra Kogut was a bright, beautiful young woman who was thrilled to be beginning her college education. Her lovely and sweet demeanor was truly infectious and she will forever be missed. Her family is very grateful for the tremendous outpouring of love and support that they have received from so many friends and neighbors."
Brockport State President John R. Halstead said the entire campus mourns her death.
"On behalf of our entire campus community, I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Alexandra Kogut," he said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to her loved ones at this difficult time. These are trying times for our campus but I know we will pull together and support each other as we move through the coming days."
