EPA announces progress in fighting smoldering fire

ATTICA - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced Sunday that its fight against smoldering fire in a huge heap of recyclable materials at Hillcrest Industries "continues going well" and that round-the-clock efforts will be cut back.
Starting today, work will be done in 12-hour daytime shifts, since steam and mist make nighttime work difficult under artificial lights, an EPA spokesman said.
Over the weekend, crews began breaking apart the 40-foot-high pile, which covers an acre. In the first 24 hours, about 5,200 cubic yards of material was moved and extinguished, the EPA spokesman reported. He added that "smoke and odors are under control" and that air monitors are detecting "very low" levels of volatile organic compounds at the site and none at all at Attica Central School.

'On the Go' car tags a bit easier to obtain

It's about to get a little bit easier to get your hands on an E-ZPass "On the Go" tag for your car.
Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs announced last week that the tags will be available in the clerk's downtown office and all Erie County Auto Bureau offices starting Thursday.
The Erie County office has partnered with the State Thruway Authority to make the tags available at the locations, according to a release from Jacobs' office.
The "On the Go" kit costs $25 and gives drivers everything they need to begin using the system, Jacobs said. After purchase, the transponder needs to be registered, either online or by calling (800) 333-8655.

District will fill post of curriculum director

The Holland School District has established a director of curriculum position, which it expects to fill by this week, interim Superintendent Sylvia Root said.
Missy Szczesniak, a former guidance counselor and curriculum coordinator in the district, performed many of the duties the new director will assume. She left Sept. 12 to accept an administrative post with the Orchard Park School District.
Holland officials said the new position was essential to help coordinate the new teacher performance review process, which kicked off last week.
