BATAVIA – Genesee County and neighboring Orleans County will embark on a two-year pilot program that would share a public health director and, possibly in the future, merge staffs and services.
The Genesee County Legislature on Wednesday approved an agreement with its Orleans County counterpart and the boards of health from both counties to provide a shared public health director.
That director is expected to be Orleans County's Paul Petit, who has served with the department in Albion for more than 13 years and is certified for the post.
Genesee's interim director, David Whitcroft, would serve as deputy director.
The two counties have similar demographics and services and could share clinics and wellness programs. Salaries of the two department heads will be split 50-50.
Separate boards of health will be maintained for the present, officials said.
The two counties already share a youth director and a global information system that locates septic systems.
