Allegany County man fatally stabbed, suspect turns himself in

AMITY - A 29-year-old man was found stabbed to death on a rural road early Friday, and a suspect in his slaying turned himself in to state troopers, state police said.
Police were alerted to a man stabbed on Tuckers Corner Road in the Town of Amity at about 12:30 a.m. Friday.
They found Jason S. Cipriano, 29, who lived nearby on Tuckers Road, lying "unresponsive" on the shoulder of the road, according to a statement from police. He was soon pronounced dead by the Allegany County coroner.
Investigators quickly learned that Cipriano had gotten into an argument with a friend - identified as Jason E. Mehmel, 33, of Angelica - that turned physical.
Mehmel allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed Cipriano in the chest.
Police said Mehmel then fled on foot from the crime scene and within an hour walked into the State Police barracks in Amity to turn himself in.
After police consulted with Allegany County District Attorney Keith Slep, Mehmel was charged with second-degree murder as well as a misdemeanor charge of weapons possession.
He was arraigned in the Town of Friendship Court and was remanded to the Allegany County Jail without bail.
The case was handed by state troopers based in Amity; the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Troop A Forensics Investigations Unit; Alfred police; Cuba police; University of Alfred police; Wellsville police; and the Amity rescue squad.
