Leonard J. Manka, steelworker, knew Father Baker; July 4, 1919 – Sept. 23, 2012

Leonard J. Manka, of Blasdell, a retired steelworker, died Sunday after a short illness. He was 93.

Born in Lackawanna, he knew Father Nelson Baker as a boy and played basketball with him.

Mr. Manka served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Centerville and went to CCC reunions every summer in Letchworth State Park.

He was called for a job at Bethlehem Steel Corp. in 1940 and worked in various positions at the steel plant, retiring in 1978.

He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a searchlight crewman.
His wife of 60 years, the former Lillian Barbic, died in 2005.

Surviving is a daughter, Linda Kovacs.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9 a.m. today in Our Lady of Bistrica Catholic Church, 1619 Abbott Road, Lackawanna.
