Headlight fragment leads to arrest of hit-and-run suspect

A Basom man is charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief for hitting eight mailboxes during a hit-and-run incident on Aug. 25, state police said.

Justin W. Nanticoke, 24, was issued an appearance ticket for 7 p.m. Wednesday in Newstead Town Court, authorities said.

State police at Clarence said Sunday that a fragment of a headlight found near a mailbox damaged on Cedar Road in Newstead led them to Nanticoke. Mailboxes also were damaged on Carney and Scotland roads.

Police said they got their break in the case after Trooper Holley Hanssel, based in Batavia, ordered a car towed from an unrelated crash scene on the Tonawanda Reservation and discovered the headlight fragment was a match.
