Ronald L. March of Alden, who retired from the State Police as a zone sergeant, died Thursday in Sisters Hospital, St. Joseph Campus. He was 76.
Also known as "Ralph" or "Newt," Mr. March was born in Mohawk and was a graduate of Mohawk Central High School.
He graduated from Cornell University, which he attended on a football scholarship.
After college, Mr. March worked in maintenance for the state Thruway Authority. He became a state trooper in 1957 and moved to this area in the mid-1960s.
Mr. March was promoted in 1980 to zone sergeant in Troop T, which covers the Thruway. He retired in 1990.
Mr. March was a member of Alden Gun Club. His interests also included bowling, camping, fishing and golfing.
Survivors include his wife, the former Lela "Lee" Vanderwiel; a son, James; a daughter, Rhonda Johnston; and a sister, Susan Ammermann.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Alden Community Church, 1400 Sullivan Road, Alden.
