Hamburg police identify man fatally hit on Sowles

A man was struck and killed by a vehicle on Sowles Road in Hamburg, police said Saturday.

Police said Cameron John, 24, of Hamburg, was struck about 3:30 a.m. Friday. Investigators are still trying to determine where John was on Sowles when he was hit and whether alcohol played a role in the fatality.

Police have not released the name of the driver, and at this point, no charges have been lodged.


Police find marijuana in home invasion probe

Authorities investigating a home invasion in the city's Grider neighborhood ended up arresting the resident on drug charges, Buffalo police said Saturday.

Police investigating the home invasion in a Schauf Avenue home said they found a pound of marijuana, according to reports.

Police got a search warrant and found 7 pounds of marijuana, 6 ounces of marijuana seeds, 256 hydrocodone pills and 2 ounces of cocaine, along with a scale and packaging material.

Jamar Jackson, 25, of Schauf, was charged with first-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and second-degree criminal possession of marijuana, police said.


DWI suspect hurt in crash accused of spitting blood

MAYVILLE -- A man whose vehicle crashed into the woods early Saturday, leaving him unconscious, later was charged with driving while intoxicated and also accused of spitting blood at emergency workers, Chautauqua County sheriff's officials said.

Sheriff's patrols and the Mayville Fire Department responded to the crash on Hannum Road in the Town of Chautauqua at about 2:50 a.m. Deputies found the vehicle crashed into the woods, with the male driver unconscious, suffering from facial injuries.

While being treated by emergency medical services workers, Scott T. Oram, 22, of Bemus Point, began swinging at the workers, authorities said. He later was accused of spitting blood at other emergency personnel and sheriff's deputies when he was taken to Westfield Hospital.

In addition to being charged with DWI and several traffic charges, sheriff's officials said, Oram will be charged with obstructing emergency workers and obstructing governmental administration. He was arraigned in Town of Chautauqua Court, where bail was set at $10,000.


Damage placed at $60,000 in apartment building fire

A fire early Saturday morning caused $60,000 damage to an apartment building in the city's Martin Luther King Park neighborhood.

Firefighters were called at 1:43 a.m. Saturday to extinguish a blaze at a two-story, four-unit apartment at 701 East Utica St., fire officials said.

The fire caused $40,000 damage to the building and $20,000 to its contents. No injuries were reported. The fire is under investigation.

The Red Cross was called to assist three adults and three children.


Nigeria native gets prison in college bookstore caper

A native of Nigeria was sentenced by Chief U.S. District Judge William M. Skretny Friday to 10 months in prison on his wire fraud conviction.

Prosecutors said that Chidinma Amorha, 24, in May and June of 2011 used fraudulent checks to pay for books and other items in bookstores at Buffalo State College, Canisius College and Niagara University.


Authorities left wondering about man shot in the foot

Northeast District police are seeking more information about a man who was shot in the foot Friday night, apparently in the city's Genesee-Bailey-Delavan area.

Gary Heard was taken to Erie County Medical Center, where he apparently was treated and released. Police said the victim was uncooperative.


Police catch up to driver who fled from traffic stop

A Buffalo man is being held on reckless endangerment and other charges after police said he sped off from a routine traffic stop on the West Side over a month ago.

Deandre C. Grayson, 21, previously convicted twice of disorderly conduct charges, was arrested on Parkdale Avenue about 6 p.m. Thursday by Officers Amy Frankle and Christopher Fields.

Grayson, charged with first-degree reckless endangerment and second-degree attempted assault, allegedly sped off as Officers Eric Hofschneider and Dustin Johnson conducted a routine traffic stop at Barton Street and Lafayette Avenue about 12:30 a.m. May 12. Hofschneider was struck in the back by the passenger-side mirror of Grayson's car as he drove off.
