Lake Erie fishing workshop? scheduled

Anglers and Lake Erie lovers at all levels of fish-lore interest have a free source for viewing exhibits and hearing expert discussion.

Department of Environmental Conservation fishery officials and expert guests will gather at Woodlawn Beach State Park, at S-3580 Lake Shore Road in Hamburg, for a Lake Erie-Upper Niagara River Fish Management Workshop on Thursday from 6:30-9 p.m.

Prior to formal presentations at 7 p.m., speakers and technical staff will have an array of informative posters and demonstrations set up a half hour before speakers discuss a variety of fishery management topics.

Biologist Jim Markham will explain means of determining fish assessments; Kevin Kapusinski will focus on muskellunge studies and projects; Tim DePriest will focus on upper Niagara River fish habitat; Don Einhouse will review aspects of bi-national fish management and regulations plus other concerns.

Attendees will have a question and open-discussion period at the end of presentations. This workshop is free.

Archer youth camp

Tri-County Kingdom Archers offers youths ages 11 to 16 a free Youth Archer Camp at the club's facilities in Delevan.

Science adventure camps

Kids ages 8 to 12 have four five-day Science Adventure Day Camp options this summer at the Penn Dixie Site in Hamburg.

Campers gather daily from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. during sessions held July 9-13, July 23-27, Aug. 6-10, and Aug. 20-24. Activities include hands-on involvements in geology, fossils, astronomy, weather, ecology, and rocketry projects conducted at the Penn Dixie Paleontological and Outdoor Education Center. Carp contest

Big fishing derby and tournaments abound. But organizers at Glenwood Lake in Medina have put together a fun Carp Fishing Derby on Saturday during the Free Fishing Days weekend.

Entrants can fish the lake on Route 63 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for awards and prizes. Adults pay $6 and kids under age 12 enter for $2 for awards and prizes.
