SOMMER, Amelia Esq. (Muscato)

SOMMER - Amelia, Esq. (nee Muscato)
Entered into rest on June 14, 2012 in Eastern Niagara Hospital. She was born in Providence Rhode Island to the late George H. Muscato and Amelia (DiStefano) Muscato. She graduated from Lockport High School in 1942 and attended The Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law. She was the first actively engaged practicing attorney in Niagara County, as a woman and had been a sole practitioner before all Courts in NYS and District of Columbia since 1959. She served as Ass't Niagara County Attorney in 1960 and as Ass't Public Defender Niagara County in 1974 and was an Acting City Court Judge in Lockport from 1988 -1998. She was admitted to Practice before the United States Supreme Court in 1986.Amelia's professional memberships included: NYS Bar Association, Past Director of The Niagara County Bar Assn., and Past President of the Lockport Bar Assn. Her community involvement included Past Secretary of the Niagara County Republican Party, Past Secretary of The Lockport Republican Committee, Past Director of The Kenan Center, Past President (3 terms) of the Lockport Women's Republic Club, Past Director of Lockport Women's College Club, member of the Charter Committee Lockport, Business and Professional Women's Club, and Past President of Briarwood Pool and Tennis Club. She has been recognized by Who's Who of American Women for the past thirty years; selected by Coalition UAW-686 and the YWCA International Women's Decade for Outstanding Contribution of Law. She loved all animals - great and small and was an accomplished equestrian Amelia is survived by her daughter, Francesca Sommer of Albany, NY; son, Christopher M. Ninos of Boca Raton, FL; several nieces and nephews and David Ninos of Lockport. She is predeceased by her husband Joseph Sommer and brother George Muscato. Friends may call on Monday, June 18, 2012 from 4-7 PM at the ROSS FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL, 263 East Ave., Lockport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church, 168 Chestnut St., Lockport followed by burial in Cold Springs Cemetery. Family would appreciate donations to Eastern Niagara Hospital, 521 East Ave., Lockport, NY.
