Lake Shore High School was mourning the death of a high school student who was found dead at the Angola school Thursday night as the result of an apparent suicide, sources told The Buffalo News.
School district officials would not confirm details of the death of the 17-year-old girl, "honoring the wishes of the family," according to a statement posted on the district's website and distributed to the media. It stated only that a high school student had died and that grief counselors would be made available to students and school employees. The school district also urged anyone seeking support to contact Crisis Services at 834-3131.
"On behalf of the entire school community, I would like to express my deepest sympathies over this loss -- as our thoughts and prayers are with family members, friends and classmates," Superintendent James Przepasniak said in the statement.
A similar recorded message went out to parents Friday afternoon, urging families to talk to their children about the incident.
Town of Evans police officials refused to comment on the death. The department has a policy of not commenting on suicides.
The senior prom, scheduled for Friday night, went on as scheduled, although students said there was a pall over the school throughout the day, with many students seen crying in hallways.
