FIRST STEPS -- The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life of Lancaster is holding its first 5K run/walk at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Lancaster High School. Registration starts at 7. Entrance fee is $20 advance, $25 on the day of the event. A post-race party will be held, with door prizes awarded according to bib numbers. For info and race forms, call Al at 656-0835.

BARGAIN TIME -- The Second Chance Sheltering Network, an all-volunteer, no-kill, nonprofit animal shelter, holds its annual yard sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday at 1761 Transit Road at Southwestern Boulevard, Elma. There also will be a barbecue with dinners at $8.50 starting at noon Saturday. Donations can be dropped off from 5 to 7 p.m. today and Thursday. Proceeds help care for homeless animals. Meanwhile, the cat rescue group Ten Lives Club is holding its annual gigantic garage sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 270 Fruitwood Terrace, off Sheridan Drive, Amherst. Salable donations, but no clothing, can be dropped off before Friday at the group's Tabbytown adoption center in McKinley Mall. MY OLD SCHOOL -- Graduates of Buffalo-area colleges will get together at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Hyatt Regency Buffalo for the biannual Alumni After Hours happy hour and networking session.

The gathering, sponsored by the offices of alumni relations at Buffalo State College, the University at Buffalo, Brockport State College, Daemen College, Medaille College and Niagara University, will bring alumni established in a variety of professions together with younger graduates to share their knowledge and advice.

Admission is $25 and includes two tickets for beer or wine, soft drinks, appetizers and desserts. A cash bar also will be open. For info, contact a participating college alumni office or call Summer Handzlik at 880-2315.

BODY VERSES -- A workshop titled "Finding Poetry Through Movement," in which movement and breath awareness will be used to stimulate creativity, will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday in Dog Ears Bookstore, 688 Abbott Road, South Buffalo, as part of the store's creative writing workshops program.

BACK IN TIME -- Tilly the Trilobite will be back to greet visitors at Children's Day from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Penn Dixie Paleontological & Outdoor Education Center off Big Tree Road in Hamburg.

There will be contests and prizes, live birds from Messinger Woods Wildlife Care & Education Center, rocket launches at 1:30 and 2:30 by "Rocket Rich," face-painting, telescopes to view sunspots and solar flares, as well as fossil collecting and rock identification.
