Democratic Committee backs Amodeo to challenge Grisanti

As expected, the executive committee of the Erie County Democratic Committee on Wednesday night unanimously endorsed attorney Michael L. Amodeo of Hamburg to take on Mark Grisanti, R-Buffalo, in the 60th State Senate District in November.

"Mike is a young professional who is committed to providing a new generation of leadership from Western New York in our state's capital," said party Chairman Len Lenihan. "It's time for a fresh approach."

The committee also endorsed incumbent Sen. Tim Kennedy, D-Buffalo, who is seeking his second term in the Senate.



Residence sought to serve as Decorators' Show House

The Junior League of Buffalo and The Buffalo News have launched their search for the 2013 Decorators' Show House.

The house, which will be open to visitors from April 17 to May 19 next year, must be located within the Buffalo city limits or in close proximity. It also must be vacant next year from Jan. 1 to June 1.

To be considered, the residence also must be of historical or architectural interest, contain at least 7,000 square feet and have two staircases, at least a two- or three-car garage, suitable yard space and off-street parking.

'Hometown Heroes' lets students connect with vets

West Seneca East Senior High School students will have the chance to connect with local veterans during their annual "Hometown Heroes" program Friday.

This is the ninth year the event will be held to coincide with Memorial Day. The 13 veterans will share their stories with 18 classes of English and social studies students.

This year's group includes four veterans from World War II, including one who was a prisoner of war.

Hometown Heroes was named the 2010 Outstanding Program/Service Award Winner by the Western New York Library Resources Council.

In connection with Hometown Heroes, East Senior High students and staff will be wearing red Friday as part of the "Red Shirt Fridays" initiative to show support to servicemen and women and their families.

Also new this year, students will be asked to place a flag on a wall map to represent where a family member or friend has served or is serving with the military.



School Board schedules special meeting today

The Cheektowaga-Sloan School Board will hold a special meeting at 6:30 p.m. today in the Irma Czubaj Board Room of Woodrow Wilson School, 166 Halstead Ave.

The board will discuss the latest 2012-13 budget proposition.

The budget was voted down by residents May 15, and board members agreed unanimously Monday night to hold a revote on the proposed $33.37 million spending plan June 19.
