Top seeds advance in BDGA tournament
Top-seeded Matthew Stasiak moved on to today's semifinals in the BDGA Men's Match Play Invitational at Country Club of Buffalo. Three of the tournament's top four seeds advanced on Thursday, including Stasiak, who defeated eighth-seeded Kenneth Riter, 7 and 6.
No. 7 seed Michael Colin Carrig beat No. 2 Billy Hanes, 3 and 2, while No. 3 Raman Luthra defeated No. 6 Nicholas Morreale, 3 and 2, and No. 4 Chris Covelli beat No. 12 Justin Pfalzer in 20 holes. The highlight of the day was Morreale's hole-in-one on the sixth hole.
Szczerbinski shines in match play
John Szczerbinski of North Tonawanda had the highest set in match play in the Greater Buffalo USBC Association's 49th George A. Obenauer Masters Championship at Transit Lanes.
Szczerbinski, a former Wichita State star, put together games of 248, 224 and 245 and beat Joe Wagner of Cheektowaga, 717-550, in the winners bracket Thursday. Cheektowaga's Joe Ciccone had the second highest score on the night in beating Jeff Walsh, also of Cheektowaga, 694-622, while Jeff Tycz beat Branden Simone, 652-584. Play resumes at 6:30 tonight.
*Finnish forward Jesse Joensuu's winning goal with nine seconds left lifted Finland past the United States, 3-2, for a place in the semifinals of the hockey world championships in Helsinki. The U.S. ended the tournament with a 6-2 record.
*Canisius College product Cory Conacher had two assists as the Norfolk Admirals beat the St. John's IceCaps, 6-1, in the opener of their AHL Eastern Conference finals series.
*Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia became the first player in Professional Bowlers Association history to win a national or senior tour title in six decades, beating Ron Mohr, 220-204, in the PBA Senior Dayton Classic in Ohio.
