PROUDLY WE HAIL -- The history of Old Glory will be the highlight as Dick Helmbrecht, "The Flag Man," gives a presentation at the Cheektowaga Historical Association meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Cheektowaga Senior Center, 3349 Broadway, behind Town Hall. It's free and open to the public.


ALL THAT JAZZ -- Volunteer docents are needed to welcome visitors and lead tours of the soon-to-be-opened Colored Musicians Club Museum at 145 Broadway. Docents will be trained by museum administrator Danny Williams and club historians. To apply, email


TIME OF NEED -- For 11 years after he was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis in 1995, John DiBartolomeo of Lancaster lived with decreased lung capacity. When it took a turn for the worse in 2006, he was lucky enough to receive a double lung transplant at the Cleveland Clinic. Now, as his new lungs are failing, he has been listed for another transplant.

Friends and family are holding a benefit to help with his medical costs from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday in Our Lady of Pompeii Ministry Center, 86 Burlington Ave., Depew. BIRD NOTES -- Want to know more about our fine feathered friends? Brett Ewald, owner of Lakeshore Nature Tours, will teach a Beginning Birding Course from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in Beaver Meadow Audubon Center, 1610 Welch Road, North Java. TEE IT UP -- A day and evening of events are planned as Big Brothers Big Sisters of Niagara County holds its 20th Annual Charity Golf Tournament next Monday at Brookfield Country Club in Clarence.

It begins with coffee and registration at 10 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 11. There will be various contests at holes around the course. The evening features silent and live auctions followed by an awards banquet.

Registration is $225 and includes golf with a cart, lunch, beverage on course, a gift bag, door prize, banquet favor, a reception and the banquet. Honorary chairman is former Sabres star Danny Gare. For information or to register, call 285-6680 or visit


COOKING OVERTIME -- Firing up the stoves and ovens on display in Modern Kitchens of Buffalo, 1680 Walden Ave., Cheektowaga, from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday will be chef J.J. Richert of Torches Restaurant for an event called COOKS, which benefits Re-Tree WNY.

Food and fine wine will be served to the accompaniment of JAGG, a contemporary jazz band. All money raised goes to plant trees to replace those lost in the October 2006 storm. Tickets are $20 each or $35 per pair. For reservations, call 783-9119, Ext. 2202; tickets also available at the door.


SMILE -- The search is on again for America's Most Photogenic Baby. Infants through 5-year-olds are eligible to be entered in the professional fashion shoot in Walden Galleria, Cheektowaga, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Entry fee is $35 per category and includes 8-by-10 color display photo. Photos will be on display in the Galleria on June 15 and 16 for judging and voting in four categories -- precious, comical, beautiful and fashionable. Winners will be announced and trophies presented in a ceremony at 1 p.m. June 17. Winners compete for America's Most Photogenic Baby.
