Lyman C. Covert, drag racer, Vietnam veteran Nov. 22, 1949 -- May 4, 2012

Lyman C. Covert of East Amherst, a veteran of the Vietnam War and a competitive drag racer, died Friday of leukemia in Roswell Park Cancer Institute. He was 62.

Known as "Bus," Mr. Covert was born in Buffalo and was a graduate of Riverside High School. He served with the Army in Vietnam.

Mr. Covert worked 30 years for Praxair Inc., retiring in 2004.

He was a sports enthusiast who enjoyed playing baseball and softball, as well as bowling, golf and fishing. A fan of Lancaster Speedway, he was a drag racer who competed in New York, Ohio and Tennessee.

Mr. Covert was a member of the Western New York Turbo Buicks car club.

Survivors include his wife, the former Karen Copeland, and a sister, Helen Saunders.

A memorial service will be scheduled.
