Norma M. Scutt, former correctional officer; Feb. 19, 1930 -- May 3, 2012

Norma M. Scutt of Alden, the first woman to rise to the rank of lieutenant as a correctional officer at Erie County's Alden Correctional Facility, died Thursday in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst. She was 82.

The former Norma Curry was born in the Town of Burns, Allegany County, and began her career as a correctional officer in 1966. She received the county's Top Gun Award for her role in preventing a riot at the Wende Correctional Facility in 1988.

Mrs. Scutt was promoted to lieutenant in 1989 and retired in 1993.

She was a member of the women auxiliary of the Lions Club and the Mary Martha Circle, a women's group connected to her church, Alden United Methodist Church.

Her husband of 39 years, Alton R., died in 1992.

Survivors include two daughters, Gale Turnbull and Karen; four sons, Everett, Marvin, Terry and Jeffrey; and a brother, Louis Curry.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Alden Methodist Church, 13242 Broadway St.
