His nickname wasn't very creative, really. Everybody who knew how much Dr. Richard Judelsohn -- who loved jazz as much as his pediatric patients (and their parents) loved him -- called him "Dr. Jazz."
His WBFO-FM radio show "Be-bop and Beyond" was a treasury of fine jazz on the radio, as well as sound music and entertaining stories. His personality was warm, engaging, generous and just about as likable as human beings get.
His love of jazz didn't end on the radio or in the audience at jazz shows. He supported it everywhere he could and did his share of introducing musicians.
It was natural that Buffalo's jazz community would want to pay tribute to Judelsohn, who died earlier this year.
Organized by emcee Bruce Eaton, there will be a Buffalo Tribute to Dick Judelsohn from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Iris Restaurant in the Maple Entertainment Complex (4224 Maple Road, Amherst). Scheduled to appear are: vocalists Laurie Bordanaro, Janice Mitchell and Colleen Williams; trombonist Phil Sims; pianists Jim Beishline, Ronnie Corsaro, Bobby Jones and Michael T. Jones; guitarists Warren Stirtzinger and Stu Weissman; bassist Buddy Fadale; and drummer Pat Hulsman.
