Walsh lifts Nichols in OT

It took overtime to end a battle between Canisius and Nichols in Monsignor Martin Association lacrosse. The Vikings earned an 11-10 win in extra time.

Nichols trailed until there was 2:11 left in regulation when the Vikings grabbed a 10-9 lead. But with 40 seconds left, Canisius tied the game, sending the match to overtime.

Just over three minutes into the extra period, Lucas Walsh scored to give Nichols (5-4) the win. Walsh finished with three goals and three assists while Sean Malone added two goals and an assist. Troy Ludtka made 11 saves, including a key stop in the fourth to keep the Vikings in the game.

Westfall, Truitt pitch no-hitters

Junior Dylan Westfall struck out 12 batters while throwing a no-hitter as West Valley blanked Sherman, 15-0, in five innings. West Valley improved to 3-1 in CCAA IV baseball and 9-1 overall.

Matt Truitt pitched a no-hitter for Hutch-Tech in its 6-1 win over Riverside in Cornell Cup. Truitt added an RBI triple for the Engineers (7-0).

West Seneca West runs at Penn Relays

Members of the West Seneca West girls track and field team competed in the 118th Penn Relays in Philadelphia. The 4x100 relay team of Brianna Colello, Katherine Connors, Gina Mucha and Kathleen Zimmer ran a time of 53.27 to finish third in their heat and 210 out of 259 large schools.

The 4x400 team of Zimmer, Abigail Jankowski, Connors and Colello finished in 4:09.71, good for fourth in their heat of 14 teams. Final overall standings were not available.

Both relay times are season bests for West Seneca West while the 4x400 turned in the top time in Western New York this season.

Track and field opens

The season began for the Buffalo Public School boys track and field teams with four races at All High Stadium. Sweeping their three-team scoring events were Hutch-Tech (race 1), Riverside (race 2), City Honors (race 3) and daVinci (race 4).

Carmen Riggs of daVinci was a triple winner, taking the 400 hurdles (108.1) the long jump (18-4) and the triple jump (39-4).

Double winners from Race 4 were daVinci's Jabril Muhammed (800, 1,600), OTC's Ryan Courton (110 hurdles, shot put) and South Park's Warren Mobley (100, 400).

Double winners from Hutch-Tech were Dannie Wea (100, 200) and Stefano Agostino (1,600, 3,200). Peter Pilarz of City Honors won the high jump and triple jump.

Riverside had a pair of double winners in Mike Vasquez (1,600 and 3,200) and Jarmel Caldwell (100, 400)..

South, West win All-Star games

Matt Hart of Canisius scored 16 points and Justice Feggans of Riverside added 14 points to lead their South team to an 83-78 win in the Niagara PAL/ACE All-Star Game. The duo played in the junior-senior game.

In the freshman-sophomore game, Wil Bathurst of Olean scored 15 points for West in a 66-64 win over East.
