Teach kids to fish at Griffin event

The Eighth Jimmy Griffin "Teach Me to Fish" kids fun event gets under way at 2 p.m. April 29 at Bison City Rod & Gun Club.

Kids accompanied by parents or caregivers have two enjoyable and instructive hours of presentations and participation activities at a series of learning stations around club grounds at 511 Ohio St.

Kids and grown-ups are welcomed to a Sahlen's hot dog lunch followed by sessions on tying fishing knots, feeding live steelhead trout, viewing the Erie County sheriff's new rescue boat, watching rod and reel demonstrations and other informative stations on the way to fishing from the club pier.

Kids get free area fishing maps, chat with local experts, and have a chance to get rod and reel outfits at the end of the program.

Top ice angler

Warsaw ice competitor Rick Ryan established highest ranking among North East Ice Tour (NEIT) entrants.

Ryan competed at four major ice-fishing tourneys, taking first-place at Silver Lake with partner Jeff Snyder Jr. Snyder won the NEIT Angler of the Year Award last year.

Ryan finished 12 points ahead of the second-place entrant.


Top guns

The indoor pistol team of Boston Valley Conservation Society took high trophies in the New York State Indoor Pistol Championship held at the Boston Valley club.

The team of Rick Powers, Cliff Faulring, Paul Korn and Jim Bugenhagen won top Expert team honors with a score of 3,355 out of a possible 3,600. Korn also finished first as high Individual Expert.


Kids summer camps

Friends of Reinstein Nature Preserve offers a "Kids in the Woods" summer day camp for youths ages 8 to 11.
