Age 79, lifetime resident of Big Flats, NY. Bob passed away Monday, April 9, 2012 in Libertyville, IL from natural causes. He was born in Buffalo NY on July 8, 1932 to the late August and Agnes (Owczarzak) Haidvogel. He was raised in Buffalo with his sister Irene. He graduated from Kensington High School in 1949 (Buffalo). A 1955 graduate of Erie County Technical Institute (Buffalo) he became a licensed optician, working at Winchester Optical Co. for over 40 years. He ran the safety glass programs in the industrial factories around the area including Corning Glass Works, Ingersoll Rand, Ward LaFrance and many others now long gone. Bob enjoyed adjusting spectacles for whoever stopped by his table.
He married Lois Mary West in June 1962 at St. Mary Our Mother Catholic Church, (Horseheads), where they were members for 50 years. Bob was a loving husband to Lois and a proud and supportive father to his two sons and their families. His life revolved around family. He was fascinated with all aspects of railroading and grew up with fond memories of his family run toy train shop located right in his home in Buffalo. A young man during the era of sleek passenger trains, he loved to take the train! He became an electric toy train collector and would meticulously set up and display his toy trains, which filled the entire basement of his home, each year over the Christmas Holidays. He loved to play with his trains any chance he got by showing them to friends and family. His passion for trains saw him as a volunteer conductor on the Tioga Central Railroad for many years. Bob enjoyed motor boating on the Finger Lakes, camping, and walking. He had travelled through all 50 states and even got to ride from Hawaii to San Diego twice aboard Navy ships with his sons. He would come along on any adventure and even attended the Indianapolis 500 back in 1952. Bob had a kind and easy going personality that fit in well as a longtime volunteer at the Arnot Ogden Hospital helping wherever needed. Bob was best described as a gentle, easygoing, and kind hearted man. He is survived by his wife Lois (Libetyville, IL), sons Rob (Sandy) Haidvogel (Libertyville, IL), Richard (Susan) Haidvogel (San Diego, CA) and grandchildren Christopher and Katherine Haidvogel.
