THOMPSON, Albert James, Jr.
THOMPSON - Albert James, Jr. Died Monday, April 16, 2012 in the Veterans' Administration Medical Center, in Buffalo. Only living son of Albert J. & Estelle (Suber) Thompson, Sr., "Daddy Al", as he was known by his family, was recognized for achieving over four decades of accident-free driving as a Niagara Frontier Transit Authority bus driver. He was the first transit worker to drive a Buffalo subway train, and was coaxed out of retirement to drive for the N.F.T.A. as a P.A.L. van driver, responsible for transporting physically-disabled individuals to medical appointments. He is survived by his devoted wife, Mattie M. (Lewis) Thompson; three daughters, Edmonia D. Watkins (Timothy), Pamela T. Sharpe (Ronald-deceased), Yvonne D. Askew (Marvin); three grandsons, Aric D. Shelton (Sari), Marvin R. Askew, II, and Brian P. Askew (J-Shawna); five great-grandchildren, Lynazia Harris, Arica and Alexis Shelton, Taylor Kaye, Noah Cordero; sisters-in-law Sarah Lewis, Viola Lewis (Wardell-deceased), Marjorie Montague (John-deceased); brother-in-law, Robert Lewis (Frances-deceased); cousin Maryama (Ramadhan) Jackson); a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives, friends and other N.F.T.A. employees.
