LINKNER - Robert E. "Bob"
Of Charlotte, NC, age 74, passed away at his home April 14, 2012. A service to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00 PM Friday at Sharon Presbyterian Church, 5201 Sharon Rd., Charlotte. Bob was born in Buffalo, NY to the late, proud parents Robert and Mildred Linkner. Growing up in Snyder, NY he graduated from Amherst Central High School. Mr. Linkner earned his B.S. and Masters Degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Kentucky, where he was a member of Chi Epsilon and Tau Beta Pi honor fraternities, Delta Tau Delta fraternity, Captain of the Kentucky Baseball team, and honorary Kentucky Colonel. He had a distinguished career as a Professional Engineer with HDR, Inc. giving nearly 45 years of service to the company. His professional accomplishments include his lifetime support of the APWA (American Public Works Association) in which he was the recipient of the 2007 Lifetime Membership Award, 2007 Public Works Excellence Award and 'Board Member Emeritus' from the Administrative Management Division of the North Carolina Chapter, and in 2009 the NC Chapter of the APWA established the 'Robert E. Linkner Private Sector Award' to recognize stellar decades long service to those Chapter members who are so deserving. Bob was the first recipient of this award in 2009 which so deservingly bears his name. Bob made countless community contributions while serving on the Mecklenburg County Energy Conservation Committee, Charlotte Mecklenburg Utilities Citizens Advisory Committee, President of Sportsman's Club of Charlotte, President of Charlotte Classic Baseball Association, Board of Directors of the Charlotte Chapter of American Amateur Hockey Association, Baseball Advisor for the 1988 Olympic Trials, and Board of Directors of Park Sharon Athletic Association. Passionate about his family 'PaPa,' as he was known by his grandchildren, enjoyed attending baseball games, family beach trips, travelling with his wife, and spending time with friends. Mr. Linkner is survived by his loving wife Carol Ann Linkner of more than 47 years; his daughter Kim (John) Lundquist (sons Austin and Eric) of Clemmons, NC; his two sons Brit (Kim) Linkner (sons Zac and Jay) of Huntersville, NC and Kent (Alison) Linkner (son Matt and daughter Marlie) of Wilmington, NC; and his sister Janet Walker (children Denise, Dale, Drew and Debbie).
