5K RUN/1-MILE WALK: Liberty Mutual Hilbert Memorial Miles 5K Run/1-Mile Walk will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday on the college's Hamburg campus, 5200 South Park Ave. Race day registration fee is $25, beginning at 8 a.m. Visit www.hilbert.edu/alumni/5k-run to obtain a brochure and registration form or to register online. FIRE COMPANY TRYOUTS: Doyle Hose Company 1 will offer volunteer firefighter tryouts and an open house from 10 to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the station, 2199 William St., Cheektowaga. Events include a coloring contest for kids, a demonstration of the latest technology, fire apparatus display and an exhibit by Rural/Metro Medical Services. Refreshments will also be provided.

EARTH DAY: The Penn Dixie Paleontological and Outdoor Education Center in Hamburg will celebrate Earth Day 2012 from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. Volunteers will conduct a site cleanup and help remove some invasive species from the site adjacent to the wetlands. Scouts, garden clubs, school and civic groups, and the public are invited to participate. Please bring a shovel, gloves, boots and energy to help make some improvements at the site. Garbage bags will be provided. Free admission for all volunteers. Fossil collecting from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. also available. Call 627-4560 for information and directions. At 7 p.m., the center will present an astronomy program offering the chance to view a thin crescent moon and Jupiter setting in the west. Telescopes will be available. No preregistration is required.

ANTIQUE SHOW: The Sanborn Area Historical Society will sponsor an antique show and sale, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Wheatfield Post 1451, American Legion, 6525 Ward Road, North Tonawanda. Admission of $3 covers both days. For information, call 990-6909.
