High winds, thunderstorms to blast through region

The violent weather system that spawned tornadoes across the nation's midsection over the weekend is expected to blast the region with wind and rain today.

The National Weather Service on Sunday issued a wind advisory for all of Western New York and the Rochester metro area from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today.

Forecasters warned of steady southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph, occasionally gusting to 50 mph. The winds are expected to bring down tree limbs and cause scattered power outages. Drivers of trucks and sport utility vehicles are advised to use caution.

Scattered thunderstorms also are likely to accompany the high winds, forecasters said, as a strong cold front approaches. Temperatures are expected to reach the upper 70s and low 80s today, then drop to the mid-40s tonight.

Service will honor crewmen killed in 1989 ship explosion

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday to honor the 47 crewmen of the Navy battleship USS Iowa who lost their lives when a gun turret exploded on April 19, 1989.

Buffalo native Nathaniel Jones, a 22-year-old seaman apprentice, was one of the 47 killed in the explosion in the Caribbean Sea near Puerto Rico.

After first blaming one of the dead sailors for deliberately causing the blast, the Navy was forced by Congress to reopen its investigation and eventually concluded that an accidental gunpowder explosion caused the deaths.

The commemoration ceremony will take place at the Buffalo & Erie County Naval and Military Park.
