Two Buffalo-area boxers, Manuel Colon and Drew Graziadei, have earned a chance to fight for national titles.
Colon won the 140-pound open class on Friday night over Dante Palmer of the Lackawanna Boxing Club to advance. Colon stopped Palmer in the first round when the referee halted the contest.
The event was held before an estimated 400 at the Statler City Golden Ballroom. All of the night's 15 bouts were three rounds.
Don Patterson, who worked Colon's corner and is also president of the Buffalo Golden Gloves, said Colon knocked Palmer down earlier in the round. He then landed a couple of solid punches, and finished him off with a left hook.
Graziadei, of Casal's Boxing of Niagara Falls, won a 4-1 split decision over Eric Rogers of the Northwest Community Center in the Super heavyweight.
Colon and Graziadei will represent the Buffalo Golden Gloves at the Golden Gloves National Tournament of Champions starting April 30 in Mesquite, Nev.
In the 140-pound novice, Dante Ettipio of WNY Boxing won a 5-0 decision over Enrique Osorio of Albany City Boxing.
Joe Mahiques of Northwest Buffalo won by disqualification over Brad Stalman of the Seneca Nation in the Super heavyweight masters division. Stalman was DQ'd in the third round for holding. In the same class, Tim O'Keefe of the UB Boxing Club won by decision over Dennis Romanowski of the Northwest Community Center.
