Bouts are road to Golden Gloves nationals

Places in the Golden Gloves National Tournament of Champions in Nevada will be on the line Friday night in the Carubba Collision Golden Gloves at the Statler City Golden Ballroom.

There will be New York State championship bouts in the Open Class, Novice and Sub Novice divisions. Open Class champions will advance to the national tournament starting April 30 in Mesquite, Nev.

The most-anticipated match will be in the super heavyweight division (201 pounds), where Eric Rogers of the Northwest Community Center will face Drew Graziadei of Casal's Boxing of Niagara Falls. Each won his semifinal by knockout.

In the 140-pound division, Manuel Colon of Northwest Buffalo will face Dante Palmer of the Lackawanna Boxing Club.

Another attraction will be the Masters Division super heavyweight bout between Joe Mahiques of Northwest Buffalo and Brad Stalman of the Seneca Nation team from Salamanca.

Admission to the Golden Gloves is $25 in advance, $30 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at the Tonawanda, Buffalo, Hamburg or Wheatfield Carubba locations as well as Doris Records, 286 East Ferry St., or online at Limited VIP seats are $50 but can be purchased only at the Tralf box office, 622 Main St., Buffalo or by calling 853-2860. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and bouts will start at 7 p.m.

ESPN's Friday Night Fights will return to the Seneca Niagara Events Center on June 29 with two 10-round bouts heading the card. The undercard will begin at 8 p.m. with the ESPN telecast from 9 to 11.

The main event will be feature welterweight Nick Casal of Niagara Falls (22-4-1, 17 knockouts) against Ruslan Provodnikov (21-1-0, 14 KOs) of Beryozov, Russia, in a 10-rounder. The co-feature will match former IBF featherweight champion Cristobal Cruz of Tijuana, Mexico, against Cesar Vazquez of Mexicali.
