A LA CARTE -- Want to be a smarter shopper? The Southtowns Family YMCA, 1620 Southwestern Blvd., West Seneca, will show you how in its Virtual Supermarket Tour class. A registered dietitian takes you aisle by aisle, sorting out the nutritious foods from the junk, showing how to read package labels and explaining how to get the best food for your dollar.

TEE IT UP -- It's not too soon to reserve a spot in the Marie Jackson Women's Scramble Golf Tournament, which will be held Sept. 15 at the Cazenovia Golf Course in South Buffalo. Fee for the nine-hole tournament is $45 and includes greens fees, a light lunch, draft beer, wine, pop and prizes. A limited number of carts are available for an additional $10.

Proceeds will provide scholarships for four South Buffalo eighth-graders to help with tuition in the Catholic high school they plan to attend. CAT FANCY -- Scouts from West Seneca Girl Scout Troop 30485 are working toward their Silver Award by helping out the Niagara Feline Friends, a no-kill cat shelter. As part of their efforts, they've arranged for an adoption day at Pet Supplies Plus, 3984 Seneca St., West Seneca, with a great selection of rescue cats ready for new homes. It takes place from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.


TALENT SEARCH -- Applications are due next Monday for the fourth annual Buffalo Music Hall of Fame Denton Cottier & Daniels Music Scholarship Award, which is given to high school students in grades 9 through 11 attending public or private schools in Western New York.
