Boys hoops banquet to debut

Many of the boys basketball players honored in these pages including the top 20 All-Western New York selections -- will be honored at the inaugural Prep Talk/BCANY Awards Banquet on April 16 at Ilio DiPaolo's Restaurant in Blasdell.

The event is being supported by The Buffalo News, the Basketball Coaches Association of New York, ADPRO Sports and longtime high school sports advocate Dick Gallagher.

Lockport girls top poll

The Lockport girls finished with a flourish.

The Lions, who were ranked seventh in the season's first edition of The News large school poll on Dec. 19, 2011, made their first appearance at the top of the charts in the final rankings of the year. Lockport was a unanimous choice for the top spot after winning the Section VI Class AA title.

Cardinal O'Hara owned the top small school spot for all of 2012.

On the boys side, both Canisius and Olean held their spots as well. Olean went wire-to-wire as the No. 1 small school. The Crusaders started the season at No. 1, regained the top spot late in the year.

ACE game tryouts

Tryouts for boys basketball's Niagara PAL/ACE all-star games will be held Apr. 24 at Niagara Falls High School, where the game will be played on Apr. 26. The game features a freshman-sophomore game and a junior-senior contest. Contact sconstantino@nfschools.net for more information.
