Reporters' notebook: Bits & pieces of news ...

OLAF FUB SEZ: According to spiritual teacher Ram Dass, born Richard Alpert on this date in 1931, "As long as you have certain desires about how it ought to be, you can't see how it is."

LOOKING BACK -- We still miss Lonnie Hudkins, proprietor of Reporters' Notebook for 25 years. He included this poem in the column that appeared on the day after his death April 5, 2007:

From death to life,

Impossible some say,

Though ancients claimed

The sun arises,

Born again each day.

And what of spring.

The buds returning,

Promising new life?

Fairy tale, or deepest yearning,

Is this not the prayer we pray?

"Let the spring last forever,

Life eternal Easter day."

-- Bill Slon
