Medaille men, women get berths

The Medaille College men's basketball team will face Eastern Connecticut State University (22-5) in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Tournament at Oswego State.

The Mavericks (25-2) clinched the automatic bid by defeating Penn State-Behrend, 65-52, in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championship game on Saturday while Eastern Connecticut defeated Rhode Island College, 82-60, in the Little East Conference title game to grab that conference's automatic qualifier.

The game will be played on Friday at a time to be determined. Host Oswego State will face Endicott College in its opening game.

Meanwhile, the Medaille women nailed down the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye in the ECAC Division III South Region Championship.

The Mavericks (22-5) will face Wednesday's winner between No. 4 Marywood and No. 5 Bethany on Saturday at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa. Should Moravian lose in the first round, the games would be played at Waynesburg, Pa.

This will be the Lady Mavs' second visit to the ECAC Tournament with the last coming in March 2005 when they fell to Lebanon Valley in their first-ever postseason berth.

*The University at Buffalo women's basketball team will wrap up the regular season tonight at 7 at Akron. The Bulls (9-20, 4-11 MAC) have won their last two games, including 61-56 against Ohio last Saturday. Akron enters tonight's game with three straight losses.
