FREW, Aili M.

FREW - Aili M. Age 91, of Conneaut, OH. died Thursday afternoon, February 16, 2012, after years of declining health. She was born December 21, 1920, in Conneaut, and was the daughter of the late Jacob and Johanna (Lepisto) Parkomaki. She married to Thomas C. Frew on June 9, 1945, at the Faith Lutheran Church in Conneaut. Together they had three daughters. Aili was an active, life-long member of the ELCA Lutheran Church, first at Faith Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir, and then at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. She belonged to Rose Chapter #22 Order of Eastern Star for over 55 years. When she wasn't selflessly caring for both her family and her husband's family, Aili worked alongside Tom at their business, Frew & Jackson Florists and Greenhouses, which they operated for almost 35 years. She ironed the aisle runners for many of Conneaut's brides, as well as detailing wedding bouquets, and filled hundreds of Memorial Day cemetery urns. She was a master at Yahtzee and crossword puzzles, and loved to teach her children and grandchildren about their Finnish heritage.
Aili's home on Dorman Road became the center of the entire family, serving as the gathering spot for every holiday and special occasion. Many fond memories were made around the counter in the kitchen, where she always cooked more food than anyone could possibly eat. There was no place like Grammy's house. Thus, she was nicknamed "The Grande Dame Matriarch". Besides her parents, Aili was preceded in death by her husband Tom, who died November 25, 1988; her brother Donald (Tauno) Parkomaki; and her sisters Julia Kesatie and Ingrid Kuivila. She is survived by her children, Hannah "Robin" (Ralph) Anderson of Williamsville, NY, Jennine (Donald) Curtin and Martha Jayne (David) Thompson, all of Conneaut; grandchildren, Tiffany Narowski (Peter) Wilkin of Olney, MD, Jill Narowski of Boston, MA, Stephanie (Jason) Lawton, of Mobile, AL, and Ryan Thompson of Conneaut; great-grandchildren Christopher and Eliisa Aili Lawton of Mobile, AL. She is also survived by her life-long friend, Bertha Koivisto of Conneaut, several nieces and nephews and step-grandchildren, R.J., Laura, and Lisa. Funeral service will be at 11:00 A.M., Friday, February 24, 2012 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 876 Grove St & Lake Rd, Conneaut, with Rev. Franklin Gore officiating. Burial will follow in East Conneaut Cemetery. Friends may call from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Thursday, February 23, at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, and also one hour prior to the service on Friday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
