School Board OKs Wheelock as village polling site

FREDONIA -- The Fredonia Board of Education has voted unanimously to allow the Chautauqua County Board of Elections to establish a polling site at Wheelock School.

St. Anthony's Church earlier this year had asked the Board of Elections to relocate the village's polling site from the church hall on Cushing Street.

All village voters will now vote at Wheelock School for village, primary, special and general elections. The first vote to be conducted will be the April 24 Republican presidential primary. Polls will be open from noon to 9 p.m. that day and voters will enter the Wheelock School campus from Chestnut Street.

"This will be a good fit for the voters of Fredonia," County Elections Commissioners Norman P. Green and Brian C. Abram said. The Board of Elections will mail a change-of-polling-site notice to all village voters affected by the change. Voters who reside in Pomfret outside of the village limits will continue to vote at BOCES or Harvest Chapel Church.

Garbage disposal fee to increase March 1

LITTLE VALLEY -- Effective March 1, the fees to dispose of garbage at Cattaraugus County refuse stations will increase.

County legislators voted last year at budget time to approve the increase, the first since 2004. It was seen as a way to generate up to $300,000 more in revenues in the 2012 budget.

The price to discard household garbage will jump from $1 to $1.50 for a 15-gallon white kitchen bag or equivalent.

A 30-gallon bag, brown or green, will increase from $2 to $3, and contractor bags of 55 gallons will be $6.

The fee increase will not affect the cost to dispose of bulky items, including chairs, mattresses, rugs, which are $5 each, or construction materials, which are charged at $20 per cubic foot.

For questions about the changes, contact the county at 938-2486.
