OPEN WINTER -- They'll have to proceed without any snow Friday and Saturday at the annual Alden Winterfest, which means no skiing, ice skating or snowmobile rides, but there will be plenty of other things to do.

It starts with a family movie night from 7 to 9 Friday in the Community Center and karaoke from 7 to 11 in the ACTS Cafe on Church Street.

Saturday's schedule begins with a pancake breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. in Alden Presbyterian Church, 13298 Broadway (Route 20), and includes a gourmet foods and crafts marketplace from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Alden Village Hall, 13336 Broadway; a family swim from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Alden High School pool; a wine, beer and chocolate tasting from 7 to 10 p.m. in Village Hall; and the annual Snowball Dance from 8 p.m. to midnight in Village Hall, with music by Hit and Run. PAGE TURNERS -- The North Tonawanda History Museum, 54 Webster St., holds its Winter Used Book Sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Paperbacks are 50 cents each or three for $1. Hardcovers are $1 each or three for $2. Or better yet, take home a bag of books for $5.

PASTA TIME -- Publicity chairman Kervin Selover reminds us that it's spaghetti dinner time from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday in Sikora Post 1322, American Legion, 950 Payne Ave., North Tonawanda. For $6, you get spaghetti, meatballs, salad, bread and butter, and a beverage; for an extra $1.50, a choice of homemade desserts.

GOOD BET -- The Home-School Association of St. Vincent de Paul School, 6441 Seneca St., Springbrook, is sponsoring a Vegas Night from 6:30 to 10:30 Saturday. Tickets are $20 advance, $25 at the door. Admission includes $5 in gaming chips, beer, wine, snacks, coffee, desserts and a chance at the door prize -- four Sabres tickets. There's also a raffle with the grand prize of a four-day, three-night trip to Las Vegas, including airfare and hotel, a $2,500 value. For tickets, call 652-8697.

GET YOUR TICKETS -- Hosting its 18th annual theme tray auction with a large assortment of baskets Friday evening is the Home-School Association of Cardinal O'Hara High School, 39 O'Hara Road, Town of Tonawanda. Admission is $5, which includes a sheet of 20 tickets. Doors open at 6:30, basket drawings begin at 8. Proceeds will help fund further renovations to the school's science laboratory.

STEPPING OUT -- St. Thomas Aquinas Parish holds its annual Winter Dance from 7 p.m. to midnight Saturday in Bishop Timon-St. Jude High School, 601 McKinley Parkway, with music by Joyryde featuring the Buffalo Brass Hitmen. Tickets are $20 and include snacks and two non-alcoholic drinks. Among the raffle prizes will be a 12-seat suite for an upcoming Buffalo Sabres game.
