Super Sunday phonathon to be aided by Facebook

The Jewish Federation of Greater Buffalo's 32nd annual Super Sunday phonathon will gain an additional dimension this year.

Steven J. Weiss and Julie D. Weinberg, co-chairmen of the fundraiser for the United Jewish Fund Campaign, will provide updates on the phonathon and their own status on Facebook during the event from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. Goal for the day is $150,000. Donations also can be made online at www.jfedbflo.com.

"Super Sunday is a really fun day," Weiss said. "It's a time when we see old friends and connect with each other. But its main purpose is much more than that. It is a day when more than 150 volunteers come together to raise much-needed funds for needy members of our local community in Western New York, in Israel and around the world."

3 finalists to compete for fire coordinator's post

LOCKPORT -- Niagara County will have a new fire coordinator by March.

Tied for the high score on the civil service test for the job were former Lockport Assistant Fire Chief Mark S. Devine and Nicholas A. Schmiegel of Ransomville. The third eligible candidate is former Upper Mountain Fire Company Chief Jonathan F. Schultz of Lewiston.

County Manager Jeffrey M. Glatz said Tuesday they will all be interviewed, while interim fire coordinator John F. Cecula III, who had been running the Emergency Management Department since June 2010, will return to his old title of assistant director.

The County Legislature's Administration Committee voted Tuesday to hire former Sheriff's Sgt. Gary Hunt, chairman of the county fire advisory board, as a consultant to provide direction through March 7, for a price of no more than $10,000.

Devine resigned from the Lockport Fire Department in 2006 after a series of arrests for run-ins with his girlfriend. He pleaded guilty to two counts of harassment, a noncriminal offense.
