GRIFFIS, John Robert "Jack"

GRIFFIS - John Robert "Jack"
Age 86, December 18, 2011, of Harwich, MA, formerly of Buffalo, NY. He is survived by 13 nephews and nieces and a brother, Roderick L. Griffis and sister-in-law, Georgia Griffis. Jack led a most eventful life. He was a graduate of Nichols Preparatory School in Buffalo. He served as an Enlisted Ambulance Driver for the American Field Service in Burma during World War II. Several years following, Jack and his brother Larry Griffis filled the shortage of war-time nylon by creating, owning and operating Fantashere, a Western New York women's hosiery business. John's life-long bent for humor and acting then led him to New York, where he was quickly absorbed into modeling and TV commercials. This lead to wide and lucrative residence and travel in New York and Europe. Eventually, returning home to Buffalo, he took residence at the Ashford Hollow Foundation on Essex St., and, from there, was the first and initial donor, and assisted in the creation of Hallwalls Art Gallery. Artists sponsored and shown at Hallwalls have graduated to the Metropolitan Museum in New York City. Jack retired to Provincetown, MA, in company with his long time companion, Patricia Larby, who
predeceased him by several years. After a stroke, Jack's final residence was Epoch of Harwich in Massachusetts where Jack was happily attended by an ever-pleasant and expert staff, who loved and admired a patient who never
complained. Jack's humor, speech, and mental facilities were with him to the end. A Memorial Service will be held in the Buffalo area at a later date.
