Nominations sought for preservation awards

Preservation Buffalo Niagara is looking for nominations for its 2012 Preservation Awards.

Projects are being sought that illustrate excellence in restoration, rehabilitation, adaptive reuse, stewardship, landscape preservation and compatible new construction.

Individuals and organizations can also be nominated, including craftsmen, preservation leaders, neighborhood organizations, preservation organizations and those fostering historic preservation through service, education or outreach.

Deadline for the nominations is Jan. 20.

Information and nomination forms are available at www.p-b-n.org. Preservation Buffalo Niagara will honor the 2012 Preservation Award recipients at a luncheon in May, national Historic Preservation Month.

College scholarship set up to honor alumnus who died

Army Lt. Jordan D. Bunker died in an automobile crash two years ago, but his name lives on at North Tonawanda High School.

A $500-a-year college scholarship for student athletes at the school was recently established in honor of Bunker, a 2004 graduate who was a top student and co-captain of the football team.

An Army lieutenant who was preparing for duty in Iraq, he died on Dec. 26, 2009, when his car went out of control on the State Thruway in Chautauqua County. He was 24.

Information about the scholarship is available from the high school's guidance office, and donations to the fund can be sent to the Jordan D. Bunker Athletic Scholarship Fund, care of the Niagara Regional Federal Credit Union, 1285 Erie Ave., North Tonawanda, N.Y., 14120.

Metro Rail extends runs two hours past midnight

Metro Rail will run an extra two hours past midnight today to accommodate passengers heading to the New Year's Eve ball drop at Roosevelt Square and the First Night celebration.

The last train is scheduled to leave Erie Canal Harbor Station, heading for University Station, at 2 a.m. Sunday, following tonight's festivities.

Trains will run at 20-minute intervals, making stops at all stations, during the extended period. However, service may be suspended temporarily due to a large crowd expected to gather near Roosevelt Square.
