Lone bidder at tax auction makes offers on 14 titles

SALAMANCA -- Only one person showed up Friday morning for the city's annual auction of tax title properties and he bid on 14 of 21 parcels offered for sale.

The city holds the auction each year and earlier this week gave permission to the city comptroller to remove any parcel that would preserve the city's tax base. The city's goal is to remove parcels that could be sold to Native Americans who are exempt from property taxes, leading to further erosion of the city's tax base.

Patrick Morris was the lone bidder for the 14 parcels and in exchange for his payment of unpaid taxes will receive tax certificates. If the parcels are not redeemed by their owners within a year, Morris will become the new owner and he will earn 15 percent interest on his investment.
