Reporters' Notebook / Bits and pieces of news...

OLAF FUB SEZ: A verse for journalists from British author and poet Rudyard Kipling, born on this date in 1865, "I keep six honest serving-men:/ (They taught me all I knew)/ Their names are What and Where and When/ And How and Why and Who."

Happy New Year

New Year's Day --

A grand new year;

Pray for friends

From far or near.

Offer joy

And peace and love;

Gaze at stars

That shine above.

Hear the children

Sing their song;

Teach them all

The right from wrong.

Bless the strangers

When they sneeze,

Listen as they

"Thank you" please.

We've got an extra

Day this year

To share God's blessings,

Banish fear.

And as the boys

Return at last,

We greet them gladly,

Hold them fast.

LAST CHANCE -- Out of things to do with your out-of-town guests? There's one more opportunity today to take a yuletide tour of Graycliff Estate, the Frank Lloyd Wright lakefront complex at 6472 Old Lake Shore Road in Derby, which is decorated for the holidays.

Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for students. Trained docents lead the tours from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and there's complementary hot mulled cider at the end. Reservations are required. Call 947-9217 or visit

BIG FINALE -- The Black-Eyed Susan Acoustic Cafe, 22 W. Main St., Angelica, will start the new year by closing for a couple weeks of building improvement, but first it plans to send the old year out with a song.

Tonight features singer and songwriter Katherine Pohl, a Berklee College of Music graduate based in Boston, Mass., offering mostly original pop and R&B songs on guitar and piano from 7:30 to 9:30. There's no cover charge.

Saturday brings Aleks and Ted -- Aleksandar Disljenkovic and Ted Mosher from Rochester's leading swing band, the White Hots -- for an evening of dinner and music from 7:30 to 10, when they will strike up "Auld Lang Syne" to accompany a sparkling New Year's toast. Reservations are essential. For info, call (585) 466-3399 or visit
