Ira Sans, founder of Prenatal-Perinatal Task Force; Feb. 8, 1932 -- Dec. 24, 2011

Ira "Jerry" Sans, of Amherst, a founder and former executive director of the Buffalo Prenatal-Perinatal Task Force, died unexpectedly Saturday in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst. He was 79.

A native of Oklahoma City, Mr. Sans moved to the Buffalo area in 1969. He was one of the writers of the original grant application that initiated the Prenatal-Perinatal Task Force. He served as its executive director until he retired in 2001 after 14 years of service.

Mr. Sans also worked with the Buffalo Planning Council and the Buffalo Partnership. He earned a bachelor's degree in geology and a master's in regional and city planning from the University of Oklahoma.

He was a defender of wildlife and the environment. He enjoyed tennis, biking, travel, gardening, drawing and writing.

Survivors include a daughter, Serena Sans-Gaber; a son, Michael D. Sans; and a sister, Dolores Burke.

Services were held Wednesday evening in Perna, Dengler, Roberts Funeral Home, Amherst.
