Niagara Honor Roll / Achievers and achievements

Ashley Crumpler, of Niagara Falls, has been awarded the Ruth and William O. Sass Nursing Scholarship for 2011-2012. Named in honor of Dr. and Mrs. William O. Sass, the scholarship is awarded annually to one or more qualified applicants pursuing a course of study leading to a baccalaureate degree in nursing. It is funded through an endowment in their names at the Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center Foundation. Crumpler is a nursing student at D'Youville College.

The Niagara Orleans Masons held a golf tournament at Willowbrook Golf Course in Lockport, with proceeds from the event going to benefit the programs and services of Niagara Hospice. Representing the Red Jacket Lodge, Joe Daniels and Mike Glynn presented a check for $1,400 to Tricia Degan, Niagara Hospice director of public relations and marketing.

On Dec. 12, Fricano Primary School students gathered to decorate more than 250 homemade holiday treats that will be shipped to U.S. troops in Afghanistan and at home. This first-time event was sponsored by Personal Touch Food Services, the company that runs the school lunch program at Starpoint. Bonnie Wander, principal, and Melissa Kusowski, food service director, coordinated this event.

The St. Francis Guild Auxiliary of Mount St. Mary's Hospital recently presented a check in the amount of $60,000 to hospital President and CEO Judith A. Maness. The funds were generated from a variety of events held throughout the year by the guild volunteers, along with sales from the hospital's gift shop. The funds will be used for renovations and medical equipment upgrades in the Mount St. Mary's Obstetrics and Gynecology Unit.

Golfweek magazine has named Seneca Hickory Stick Golf Course one of the "Best Casino Courses" in the United States. The news is featured in the magazine's January 2012 issue.

Seneca Hickory Stick is one of the newest courses listed among Golfweek's top 50 casino courses and is one of four recognized from New York State. The $25 million course, designed by world-renowned golf course architect Robert Trent Jones II and owned by Seneca Gaming Corp., celebrated its first full season of golf this year after initially opening July 2, 2010.

Hickory Stick is located in Lewiston. A year ago, it was voted No. 6 "Best New Golf Course" by Golf magazine.

The Youngstown Yacht Club announced the installation of new officers for the 2012 yachting season.

The positions are as follows: commodore, Tony Byrne; treasurer, John Reinhold; secretary, Chris Guard; vice commodore fleet, Mark Schimley; vice commodore yard, Jason Suitor; vice commodore house, Wright Ellis.

Directors are Andrew Mess, Paul Cannon, Steven Suitor, Dennis Niccola, Shawn Webber and Peter Doyle.

The Youngstown Yacht Club will begin its 81st season in 2012.
