WOOD, Gwen Rich

WOOD - Gwen Rich Age 71, of Hilton Head Island, SC, formerly of Amherst, NY and Ellicottville, NY passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 17, 2011, after a six year battle with Alzheimer's disease. Gwen is survived by her husband of 50 years, Barry: two daughters, Tammy W. Gaffney (James) of Rochester, NY, Cathy W. Titus (Daniel) of Richmond, VA and a son Scott A. (Lynn) of Rochester, NY; her grandchildren, Katie and Collin Titus, Alicia and Michael Wood; her sister Jean Matthews (Tad). She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Mildred Rich and her sister Carol (Fritzie) White. Gwen was born May 7, 1940 in Buffalo, NY. She was a 1958 graduate of Amherst Central High School. After graduation Gwen attended Millard Fillmore School of Nursing at the University of Buffalo. Upon graduation in 1961 Gwen worked at the Millard Fillmore Hospital in Buffalo. She then took time off to raise her family, then returning to work as a school nurse in the Amherst Central School System, a job she truly loved. Gwen loved being around water, swimming, water skiing, boating and walking the beach. When she was 13 she and her sister "Fritzie" raced their 19' Chris-Craft runabout in the International Regatta on the Niagara River. They were the only girls entered and over the course of two years received quite a few trophies. She later enjoyed cruising the Great Lakes with Barry on their boat. Gwen will be sadly missed by her family and those whose lives she touched. A memorial service will be held Friday, January 13, 2012, at 2:00 PM with a reception to follow at The Island Funeral Home and Crematory, 4 Cardinal Road, Hilton Head Island, SC. The family would like to thank the loving and caring staff of Memory Matters, Palm Meadows Court and Tidewater Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Memory Matters, PO Box 22330, Hilton Head Island, SC 29925 or to Tidewater Hospice Foundation, 10 Buckingham Plantation Drive, Suite A, Bluffton, SC 29910.
