Carolina 3, Chicago 0: Cam Ward made 30 saves in his first shutout of the season and the Hurricanes snapped a three-game losing streak. Tim Brent scored on a deflection and Brandon Sutter and Jiri Tlusty added third-period goals.

San Jose 4, Detroit 2: Joe Thornton scored twice and Antti Niemi made 30 saves in the Sharks' win. Patrick Marleau had a goal and an assist for San Jose, which won its fourth straight.

Edmonton 3, Colorado 1: The Avalanche hadn't lost their first three home games of a season in 13 years, but they reached that mark Friday. Devan Dubnyk had 40 saves for the Oilers.

Calgary 3, St. Louis 1: Roman Horak had a goal and assist for the Flames. St. Louis was seeking its first four-game win streak since winning five in a row Dec. 21-31.

Around the league

Columbus Blue Jackets: Recalled forward Matt Calvert from their American Hockey League affiliate in Springfield, Mass., and have assigned left wing Maksim Mayorov and defenseman David Savard to the Springfield Falcons. Savard was recalled from Springfield on Thursday and was sent back Friday.

Phoenix Coyotes: Acquired center Cal O'Reilly from the Nashville Predators for a fourth-round pick in next year's NHL draft.
