CORNELIUS, Virginia B. (Becker)

CORNELIUS - Virginia B. (nee Becker) Betty Cornelius, born Virginia Elizabeth Becker on April 17, 1915, died October 16, 2011, beloved wife of the late Adam E. Cornelius, Jr.; loving daughter of the late Mabel and Carl Hugo Becker of Buffalo, NY. Mrs. Cornelius was in the first class of Amherst Central High School where she wrote the school's creed. She was named valedictorian of her high school class, but due to a family move her senior year, she graduated from Bennett High School in 1933. She attended Bryant & Stratton Business School and served as executive assistant to two presidents of The Marine Trust Company, which later became Marine Midland and was acquired by HSBC. In 1948, she married Adam E. Cornelius, Jr., an executive with American Steamship Company. A lifelong member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Cornelius was a supporter and volunteer at Millard Fillmore Hospital, and served on the board of the Presbyterian Homes of New York. She was an avid member of The Buffalo Club, The Buffalo Country Club, The 20th Century Club and Cherry Hill Club. A tireless Buffalo booster, she also had a home in Jupiter, Florida. She is survived by a daughter, Linda Cornelius of New York City, a son Adam E. Cornelius, III of Armonk, NY; step-daughters Bonnie Spitzmiller of Vero Beach, Florida and Carol C. Walker of Santa Clara, California; five grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, and six step-great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held in the future.
